Fitzroy Harbour

Fitzroy Harbour est un petit village de la ville d’Ottawa, dans l’est de l’Ontario. Il est situé sur la rivière des Outaouais à l’embouchure de la rivière Carp. Une branche du fleuve Mississippi, connue sous le nom de Snye, se jette également dans l’Outaouais à l’ouest du village.

Le parc provincial Fitzroy est situé à proximité.

Histoire

La ville a été fondée par Charles Shirreff en 1831. Il y avait une cascade connue sous le nom de Chats Falls sur la rivière des Outaouais, plus tard remplacée par une centrale hydroélectrique et un barrage, actuellement exploités par Ontario Power Generation.

En 1866, Fitzroy Harbour était un village de poste avec une population de 200 habitants du canton de Fitzroy, sur la rivière des Outaouais, à la tête de la navigation du lac Duchesne, sur une petite baie parsemée de belles îles. Les pittoresques chutes de Chats, qui forment onze chutes qui font jusqu’à trente-trois pieds en hauteur, se trouvent à proximité. Du côté sud de la rivière, en face du village, se trouvait le toboggan à bois du gouvernement. La communauté possédait l’énergie hydro-électrique, un secteur de fabrication, trois églises construites en pierre: l’église d’Angleterre, l’église presbytérienne du Canada et l’église catholique romaine. Le Fourth Division Court a eu lieu ici et à Riddle’s Corners, alternativement. Le Loyal Orange Lodge, n° 541 se réunissait au Orange Hall le premier vendredi de chaque mois.

En 1974, le canton de Fitzroy a été fusionné avec Huntley et Torbolton pour former West Carleton.

En 1977, le centre communautaire de Fitzroy Harbour a été construit. Cette installation comprend actuellement une salle principale et des salles de réunion, deux terrains de softball, des terrains de soccer, une aire de jeux et une patinoire extérieure.

Galetta

Galetta est une communauté rurale dispersée du quartier West Carleton-March, dans l’ouest rural d’Ottawa. Galetta est située sur la rivière Mississippi près de son embouchure dans la rivière des Outaouais. Autrefois partie du canton de Fitzroy et plus tard de West Carleton, elle fait aujourd’hui partie de la ville d’Ottawa.

Selon le recensement de 2011, la population de l’aire de diffusion de Galetta était de 545 habitants, ce qui comprend également les communautés voisines de Vydon Acres, de la Marshall Bay et d’une partie de Mohr Corners.

Histoire

La région a été colonisée pour la première fois en 1823. Elle s’appelait à l’origine Hubbell’s Falls en l’honneur de James Hubbell.
Le bureau de poste a été créé en 1850 et a été conservé à Riddle’s ou Mohr’s Corners, James Riddle a servi comme maître de poste en 1866. En 1866, Hubbell’s Falls était un village d’environ 200 habitants dans le canton de Fitzroy, sur le fleuve Mississippi. La rivière possède une chute de vingt pieds. Hubbell’s Falls contenait une école, avec une fréquentation moyenne de quarante-cinq élèves.

Le village a été rebaptisé Steen’s Falls après James Steen qui y a construit un moulin. En 1873, le nom fut changé à Galetta Galetta après James Galetti Whyte qui a construit des moulins sur la rivière.

En 1892, le chemin de fer d’Ottawa, Arnprior et Parry Sound a érigé une ligne à travers la ville, qui est devenue plus tard une ligne secondaire du chemin de fer national du Canada. Depuis 1974, l’utilisation est limitée.

Une petite centrale hydroélectrique sur le fleuve Mississippi se trouve à Galetta. Celle-ci est opérationnelle depuis 1907. Carp

Carp is a compact rural community in the West Carleton-March neighborhood of the City of Ottawa, located in the northwestern part of the municipality on the Carp River. Prior to the amalgamation in 2001, Carp was located in the Township of West Carleton.

Carp is located in the electoral district of Carleton-Mississippi Mills.

According to the 2011 census, 1,965 people lived in the Carp region. The area is bounded by Craig Sideroad / Murphy Sideroad to the north, the old township boundaries to the east, March Road to the south and Thomas Argue Road to the west.

History

In 1866 Carp was a post village of 200 people in Huntley Township on the Carp River, 20 miles from Ottawa. The village contained three stores, workshops, three hotels and a town hall. Loyal Orange Lodge, # 439, met at Orange Hall Carp on the first Wednesday of each month. The citizens included JW Featherston, general merchant and postmaster.

The village takes its name from the Carp River which runs through the village. Main Street was once a section of the Trans-Canada Highway and carried much of the traffic coming from the west to Ottawa. However, the village was bypassed with the development of Highway 417.

With the amalgamation of the region’s municipal governments in 2001, Carp is now governed under the new city of Ottawa. Carp is used as the mailing address for much of the former Township of Huntley. As such, the people of this vast region identify as living in Carp, although they may live great distances from the village itself.

Carp’s main attraction is the Diefenbunker, the Canadian Cold War Museum located north of the village. The museum was featured in the movie The Sum of All Fears. This once top-secret underground bunker was originally built to house key members of the government in the event of a nuclear attack on Ottawa.

In 1960, NATO and Canada’s Department of National Defense built a Satellite Communications Station (SATCOM) that supports a 68-foot-diameter metal space frame radar dome (radome) on its roof. The radome provides environmental protection for the 50 foot diameter SATCOM antenna it houses. The antenna provided satellite communications between all NATO countries until 1999, when NATO and DND decommissioned the site. In 1999, it was purchased by Canadian Space Services Ltd. to serve as the head office.

The Carp Exhibit Hall, one of the few octagonal framed fairground buildings in existence in Ontario, continues to serve as the main fairground for the Carp Fair which has been held in September since 1880. During the remainder of the year , buildings and grounds serve the popular Carp Farmers Market. The market is organized every Saturday from May to October. The red painted exhibit hall with white trim, which remains a focal point in Carp, was included among other architecturally interesting and historically significant buildings at Open Doors Ottawa on June 2-3, 2012 .

Carleton Masonic Lodge # 465, a turn-of-the-century church building (1900) has been the Masonic Lodge for the village of Carp since 1925. The building features original stained glass windows and is decorated with beautiful oak furniture that was in originally located in a WWI Masonic lodge in France. The original Masonic Lodge building, which dates from 1904, was destroyed by fire in 1920.

Carp was the site of an alleged UFO landing in 1989. It has been called « one of the most significant cases in UFO history ». Someone nicknamed « Guardian » filmed the UFO crash. The American television show Unsolved Mysteries filmed an episode on Guardian in 1993.

There are three schools in the Carp region: Huntley Centennial Public School, St. Michael’s (Corkery) and Venta, a private school.

Carp Airport is located just south of the village.

The Carp River

This Carp River originally took its name due to the overwhelming amount of carp fish that lived there. At the beginning of the 19th century, the river was overrun with fish because farmers threw all their dead animals into it. CORKERY

Corkery est une communauté rurale dispersée dans le quartier West Carleton-March, dans la partie ouest d’Ottawa. Corkery est situé à environ 9 km au sud-ouest de Carp, dans l’ancien canton de West Carleton.

Corkery a été fondée par environ 100 familles irlandaises du comté de Cork qui ont immigré dans la région au début du 19e siècle, connues localement sous le nom de «colons Peter Robinson».

La première église du village a été construite en 1837, bien que certains rapports la situent à 1824, ce qui en ferait la deuxième plus ancienne église catholique de la région d’Ottawa. La construction a commencé en 1864 sur une église en pierre destinée à remplacer la structure en bois. Le 26 février 1865, l’église fut achevée et consacrée comme paroisse catholique St. Michael. CONSTANCE BAY

Constance Bay est un centre de population du quartier West Carleton-March, dans le nord-ouest rural de la ville d’Ottawa. Avant la fusion en 2001, la communauté faisait partie du canton de West Carleton. Il est situé à 25 km au nord-ouest de la banlieue de Kanata. La communauté entoure la forêt de Torbolton (un espace vert protégé et géré) et est située sur une péninsule entre Constance et Buckham’s Bay sur la rivière des Outaouais. Selon le recensement de 2011, la population de la communauté était de 2 364 habitants. 86% des logements sont occupés par des résidents habituels.

La communauté a un magasin général (autorisé), 2 restaurants, un bar/salon et une chapelle. La Légion royale canadienne, filiale 616 est également située dans le village.

Pendant les mois d’été, la communauté offre 2 plages, la navigation de plaisance, le ski nautique, le canoë, la randonnée, l’équitation et le cyclisme. Pendant les mois d’hiver, il y a la pêche sur glace, la motoneige, le ski de fond, le patinage sur glace et l’équitation.

Un centre communautaire est situé au centre de Constance Bay. Le fonctionnement du centre est supervisé par l’association communautaire Constance & Buckham’s Bay. Le centre communautaire comprend un parc de planche à roulettes gratuit avec 2 terrains de baseball (tous deux entièrement éclairés pour le jeu de nuit), des terrains de football (complets et mini), une structure de jeu, une patinoire extérieure et un stand de concession exploité par des bénévoles de la communauté.

Histoire

La baie actuelle a été nommée par les marchands de fourrure français en l’honneur de Simon Constant, membre de la Première nation algonquine qui se trouvait dans la région avant l’arrivée des colons blancs.

TW Edwin Sowter, un archéologue amateur d’Aylmer, au Québec, a identifié pour la première fois la présence de sites archéologiques à Constance Bay à la fin des années 1800. Cependant, les détails de ces sites n’étaient pas disponibles jusqu’à ce que Gordon Watson fouille un site dans sa cour de chalet à Constance Bay au début des années 1970. Watson a documenté ses découvertes dans «A Woodland Indian Site at Constance Bay» disponibles auprès de la Société archéologique de l’Ontario. Un des items de la collection Watson est un grand récipient en céramique reconstruit datant d’il y a environ 2500 ans.

En 1946, la première chapelle Saint-Gabriel est ouverte. Le père J. Lorne Reynolds est nommé curé de la paroisse.

Hydro (service électrique) a été introduit dans la communauté à l’été 1951.

Forêt de Torbolton

La forêt de Torbolton est un espace vert géré de 147 hectares qui abrite une végétation, des animaux et des oiseaux rares. La forêt a été désignée par la province de l’Ontario comme une zone d’intérêt naturel et scientifique d’importance provinciale (sciences de la vie).

DUNROBIN

Dunrobin est une communauté du quartier West Carleton-March de la ville d’Ottawa. Dunrobin est situé à environ 35 kilomètres au nord-ouest du centre-ville d’Ottawa. La communauté se trouve dans une vallée, nichée entre la rivière des Outaouais et l’escarpement de Carp, et est située à 45,18 ° de latitude et 75,55 ° de longitude. Dunrobin est situé sur l’ancienne frontière entre le canton de West Carleton et Kanata (anciennement le canton de March). Dunrobin a fusionné avec la ville d’Ottawa en 2000. L’association communautaire Dunrobin définit les limites de la communauté comme Murphy Sideroad, Constance Lake Road et Berry Sideroad au sud, la rivière des Outaouais à l’est, une ligne suivant le chemin Limestone jusqu’à Kinburn Sideroad jusqu’au chemin Stonecrest jusqu’à Thomas A. Dolan Parkway jusqu’à Marchhurst Road, et au nord par une ligne suivant Kilmaurs Sideroad jusqu’au chemin Woodkilton jusqu’à Kinburn Sideroad jusqu’à Constance Creek au nord.

Dunrobin a été établi au 19ème siècle à l’angle de Dunrobin Road et Thomas A. Dolan Parkway. Le centre-ville comprend un centre communautaire avec des installations de loisirs de plein air et un certain nombre de petites entreprises. Bien qu’à l’origine il s’agissait d’une communauté agricole, Dunrobin sert maintenant principalement de point focal au sein d’une communauté plus vaste qui compte une population mixte d’agriculteurs, de navetteurs travaillant à Kanata et d’Ottawa-Gatineau, de propriétaires de chalets et de retraités.

Dunrobin tire son nom du château de Dunrobin près d’Inverness, en Écosse.
